The SAFER WORKING PRACTICES HANDBOOK is an essential element of your safeguarding processes.

It is extremely important to develop guidance on safer working practices.  Without robust and clearly communicated practices for working safely with children your safeguarding, whistle-blowing and supervision processes are not as effective as they could be.

The Plymouth Enquiry into the abuse suffered at Little Ted's Nursery stated that staff need to be clear on what is appropriate behaviour and practice.  This is crucial in supporting your setting's whistle-blowing policy and procedure for managing allegations made against staff as laid out in the EYFS.  The handbook covers topics that you should address with all staff and it is excellent practice to define this in a staff meeting, they include:

favoritism; staff caring for children outside of the provision; clothing; tending to children's personal care needs and many more similar topics.

It is crucial to clearly define with your staff as to what is appropriate behavior and this handbook helps you to do this by providing pertinent points to prompt sensitive, yet crucial, discussion.  Staff who are involved with policy making are more likely to take ownership and are more likely to consistently adhere to procedures in place.  For a management and leadership perspective, this enables you to monitor and maintain accountability across all aspects of provision for children.

If an allegation leads to a member of staff being suspended, the procedures relating to employment law and disciplinary measures will must be supported by clear and well communicated safer working practices and so the handbook should be an integral part of documentation made available to all staff, especially during the induction of new staff stage.
