The requirement for providers to carry out an annual appraisal was removed from the EYFS during its revision in 2014.

The reason why is because staff development should be a part of everyday practice and not something that is addressed once per year.  Instead, the focus is upon monitoring practice as part of ongoing reflective practice.

The Early Years Inspection Handbook provides an 'outcome' focused approach meaning that practice should be managed to ensure that all children achieve the very best.  The EYFS requires providers to ensure that all children make 'better than typical' progress.  This means that the focus lies with the quality of teaching and learning.  Ofsted will assess how effective your arrangements for staff development are in light of the impact upon the quality of teaching and learning taking place.  You can download our robust template for peer observation that evaluates the quality of teaching and learning.

Peer observations should inform the arrangements for the mentoring of individual staff.  Our templates help to clearly record, evaluate, review and monitor these arrangements and consider the impact upon outcomes for all children.  This is essential in ensuring that children's progress and achievements are sustained.  The templates also cross reference with the setting's SEF.

Providers must tackle under-performance swiftly, which may involve initiating disciplinary processes including those relating to employment law.  For these reasons, recording must be effective. 

A supervision record template is included and secures understating in relation to suitable people and whistle-blowing to ensure that procedures in place to safeguard children are consistently communicated and adhered to. Supervision can often help to identify support that staff may need and so informs the basis of mentoring support arrangements.
